“Ugly”

i must say, i actually had my doubts about this song. when i heard the teaser at the end of the 2ne1 TV i was like…uhhhh….i’m not ugly…..wtf is this. 

but the song has actually really spoken to me. i had not anticipated the degree of bite the song would have, and the execution of the music video almost made me tear up.

i think everyone knew from the beginning that 2ne1 was going to be a new page in the saga of kpop girl groups. suddenly, instead of watching girls swoon over (sometimes equally girly looking) guys and constantly doing cute things with their hands, lining their eyes with  glitter, wearing shorts that were sometimes questionably short and, at the very root of it, reigning over the asian music industry with their iconic ‘cute’ image, SUDDENLY here is 2NE1. 

A dose of angst, a showering of designer apparel, and plenty of attitude, 2NE1 appeals to all who feel like they just dont fit in the with ‘cute’ size 0, 45 kg style. not to say that i didnt love the music of the cute era and i will not lie, i did see SNSD perform live once and i’m not going to say i didnt love it, but 2NE1 ultimately caters to a different side of the girl dynamic.

here, finally done right, is the strong sexy girl that lives [sometimes shyly] in side all of us. saying that 2NE1 is ‘fierce’ really is an understatement, let alone a crappy way to label YG’s girl group. i think their image goes a lot farther than that. independence, vitality, rebellious, and now, strength are all part of the grass roots behind 2NE1’s image [from what i think]

what i really love about UGLY is the universal feeling behind it. every girl, at some point, within some environment, struggles with the concept of ‘pretty’, often defaulting on those typical words “i’m ugly” or my friend’s personal favorite “i’m so ugly” when we feel inadequate. i love how the producers of this song [teddy perhaps?] used that phrase and turned it right on its head—not only do the girls sing about being ugly, but they tear up a place where no ugly girls are allowed. that to me is a testament to all of our girl power, all of our unspoken ferociousness that cowers behind the belief that “i’m ugly.”

and thats why i love 2NE1. sorry for the rant. its just, in a day and age where kpop churns out another cute girl group nearly every week, monopolizing on the female ability to appear delicate and charming, its nice to see that there is a group out there with a different side to them.

at least for me, still a young adult living in today’s society, i dont want to grow up and become a shy, under-spoken, cute girl who always needs saving from a prince [though sometimes it would be nice] and can’t stand up for what she thinks.

i want to become a girl who knows how to bite back. so, for right now, 2NE1 is the group for me. much love.

its the first time ive felt very much elated on a song (altho i pretty much feel the same with other songs. tee-hee)

well. i have to say the song got me the first time i heard of it.

it really is good. SHOUT-OUT to all the people out there.

if u’ve got a LOT and i mean LOT of insecurities? then FEEL IT!

you can never hide that. but then, BE PROUD of what you have.

everyone has their bad times, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be like that forever.

this song speaks about STANDING UP for yourself!

you may never be better than others but i assure you that

YOU CAN BE THE BEST OF WHO YOU ARE.

the songs lyrics may feel like its all about their complaints, but NO.

this is how YG/Teddy works, in the end they make you realize it in your own way on what message the song truly wants to reveal to all of us listeners.

so STAND UP! BE PROUD!
